TEACHING METHOD - M: Teaching will be initially by ear with written music
New players of the wire-strung Highland clarsach are very welcome to join this course. Using both historical and traditional pieces, we will reinforce basics and explore damping techniques that allow the music to shine, without the clutter of excessive ringing. All sizes of harps can be used, and it’s helpful to have fingernails at least 2 mm long. As we interpret the pieces we will focus on cleanly playing melodies and will see how to release harmony from melody. Additionally, we will learn how to play crisp decorative figures found in historical sources and how to apply interesting accompaniments.
